anti-racism project
Project summary
This project started from Our Solid Roots Association (OSRA)’s mission of supporting individuals recovering from substance use and understanding what drives people to substance use in the first place. OSRA’s mission of supporting individuals struggling with substance use is impacted by negative external factors such as racism and discrimination. These factors can drive individuals towards substance use, or hinder their recovery and healing process. OSRA works closely with BIPOC communities and is making efforts to dismantle systems of oppression and address deep-rooted traumas which can lead to substance use. This project was conducted by gathering insights from three pilot groups in the Calgary/Foothills area, which included an Afrocentric/Black group, Indigenous group, and Caucasian group. These groups were purposed with open discussions on racism, discrimination, and recognizing privilege.
